About Vipassana Meditation
Vipassana meditation is a unique practice discovered by the Buddha. It consists of observing one’s own mind and body in order to understand their true nature and develop insight knowledge. This is the very method the Buddha himself cultivated to gain Enlightenment and later taught it to his disciples during his time. The practice has been preserved and continues to be handed down to the present day. -“This is the only way, bhikkhus, for the purification of beings, for the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of pain and grief, for reaching the Noble Path, for the realization of Nibbāna, namely, the Four Foundations of Mindfulness.” The Buddha, "Mahā-Satipathana Sutta" (The Great Discourse on the Foundation of Mindfulness) The practice of Vipassanā meditation leads meditators to a clear understanding of ultimate reality. With such an understanding, meditators are able to temporarily free themselves from ignorance and craving, which are the source of suffering. Once the practice is mature, meditators may experience Nibbāna and attain enlightenment, the ultimate emancipation from suffering or a state of total freedom. Vipassana meditation is often translated as “Insight Meditation” because it enables practitioners to gain direct insight into the true nature of mental and material phenomena, in particular the three common characteristics of impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and non-self. It is also known as “Mindfulness Meditation” because practitioners develop mindfulness, concentration and wisdom by contemplating the Four Foundations of Mindfulness - materiality, feeling, mind and Dhamma objects.
Mahasi Sayadaw’s Instructions
At the TMC Vipassanā meditation is practiced according to the method taught by Mahasi Sayadaw. To develop mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom, meditators strive to maintain continuous awareness throughout the day. This includes alternating one hour of sitting meditation with one hour of walking meditation, while also remaining mindful during all daily activities—from waking in the morning until going to sleep at night.
Eight Precepts
The Eight Precepts must be observed by all meditators while on intensive retreat. These precepts help cultivate moral purity, which supports the purification of the mind and serves as the essential foundation for the further development of concentration and wisdom. The eight precepts: -Refraining from killing -Refraining from stealing -Refraining from sexual conduct -Refraining from telling lies -Refraining from taking drugs, intoxicants, and alcohol -Refraining from eating from between noon and dawn the next day -Refraining from dancing, singing, making music, watching shows, and using adornments, cosmetics and perfumes. -Refraining from using high and luxurious beds or seats
Rules and Regulations ?????
Rules and guidelines are established to protect meditators and to maintain a safe, supportive environment for practice. They help create the necessary conditions for developing mindfulness, concentration, and insight without distraction or disturbance. Therefore, for the benefit of both oneself and others, it is essential that all practitioners respectfully observe and follow these rules throughout the retreat.
Daily Schedule
Meditators practice diligently from early morning until late at night, alternating one hour of sitting meditation with one hour of walking meditation, while maintaining mindfulness during all daily activities. A Dhamma talk is given daily, and meditators meet with a teacher several times a week to receive personalized instruction.
