It was a sad day for us when we learned that Sayadawgyi U Pandita passed away on April 15, 2016 at 6:05 PT. It is a great loss to the Sasana and to us all. In remembrance of Sayadawgyi, Tathāgata Meditation Center (TMC) would like to invite you to participate in the weekend Vipassanā retreat from May 7 to May 8, 2016 and then share the merits to all beings. This is the best way to remember Sayadawgyi since Sayadawgyi, while still alive, always wanted his students to practice Vipassanā meditation. Then on Sunday May 8, 2016 at 12:30 P.M., we will conduct a memorial ceremony for Sayadawgyi before the retreat ends. Everyone is invited to this ceremony.
Sayadawgyi U Pandita was one of the most famous meditation teachers of our time.
Since 1951, he had taught Vipassana meditation to thousands of meditators around the world with compassion and loving-kindness. With vast meditation experience and thorough knowledge of the Buddha’s teachings, he had led meditation retreats for more than 60 years. He had come to TMC to teach meditation since 1991. Sayadawgyi was the founder of Panditarama Meditation Center in Burma. He set the best example for us all to live a worthy life.
The retreat is free of charge. Interested yogis should return the enclosed application to TMC as soon as possible since the acceptance of yogis to the retreat is based on the first-come-first-serve basis. We will inform yogis about their status. Accepted yogis should bring sleeping bag or blanket, a water bottle, and other daily necessities when coming to the retreat. For convenience, yogis could arrive at TMC after 5:00 P.M. on Friday May 6, 2016. Room assignment and orientation packet will be handed out upon checking in with the TMC’s retreat coordinator or registrar at the office.
In addition, in our letter regarding the June 2016 retreat sent out just before April 15, 2016, we have informed you that "Saydawgyi is considering coming to the United States this year to lead the special 30-day June retreat from 5 AM Wednesday June 1 to 12 Noon Thursday June 30, 2016 at Tathāgata Meditation Center (TMC). In case Sayadawgyi cannot make it due to his health, Sayadawgyi will assign one of his most qualified disciples to lead the retreat on his behalf. If that is the case, we will post information regarding the substitute Sayadaw on our website." For this, we now wait for Panditarama’s Sangha to make such a decision. We have Sayadaw U Thuzana, TMC's abbot, to stand by, however.
For those who would like to make donation to Panditarama Meditation Center to cover the medical cost for treatment of Sayadawgyi's illness and then funeral expenses, please make it payable to TMC, memorandum of Panditarama's Sayadawgyi. We will collect all the donations and send them to Panditarama Meditation Center accordingly.
May all Sayadawgyi's disciples be able to carry their Dhamma duty and emulate Sayadawgyi's life-long work for all beings. May all of us be peaceful at this difficult time.
